The Red Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs have been playing inspired basketball for the last month and they claimed their third district win last Monday defeating the Lady Cougars from Goodpasture by a final score of 49-29.The Lady Bulldogs could not find their shooting touch early in the game but neither could the Lady Cougars. The first quarter ended with the Lady Bulldogs on top 11-4.The Lady Bulldogs shots were not finding the bottom of the basket but their man to man defense was causing the Lady Cougars all kinds of problems.
The Lady Bulldogs managed 11 points in the second quarter but their defense was outstanding as they held the Lady Cougars to only four second quarter points and the Lady Bulldogs took a 22-8 lead to the dressing room at the break. There is a old saying in basketball that a team might not be playing good offense but they can play good defense and that is just what the Lady Bulldogs were doing. The Lady Bulldogs shot 21% from the floor in the first half while the Lady Cougars just 14 %. Those kinds of stats are not what you would expect. The Bulldogs would finish the game shooting 45% while holding the Lady Cougars to only 28%. The Lady Bulldogs offense was stagnant for most of the game scoring 12 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter.
This was not one of the Lady Bulldogs best effort on offense but their defense was great for the first three quarters and that is what won this game. Scoring totals for the Lady Bulldogs are: Hannah Smith-14 points-Cayley Tuck-15 points-Abby Tuck along with Shaylee Ellingson and Tamara Murphy each had 5 points. Maggie Isenberg had 3 points and Macy Raines had 2 points to round out the scoring. Every Lady Bulldog that played scored.
The boys game was all Goodpasture from the tip off until the final horn although the Bulldogs played hard the entire game. The Cougars hit 5 three pointers in the first quarter and grabbed a 21-8 lead heading into the second quarter. Bulldog coach Michael Owens did not start his 2 leading scorers nor should he have. The team always comes first but things will be back to normal the next game at Gordonsville this Friday night. The Cougars halftime lead of 37-19 was not the fault of the Bulldogs because the Cougars were hitting shots from all over the court.
The Bulldogs never lost their desire to compete but Goodpasture was just the better team on this night. They go twelve deep and their length and size takes its toll on you if you get down early .The Bulldogs scored 12 points in the third quarter and 8 points in the final quarter and let's make sure that Bulldogs fans understand that the Cougars could have run the score up if they had wanted too.
