The Red Boiling Springs Bulldog football season came to a close last Friday night as the Bulldogs made the short trip to Gordonsville. They gave a great effort but the Tigers were just too strong. The Bulldogs found themselves on the short end with a 42-6 defeat.
The Bulldogs drew first blood on a 29 yard pass play from quarterback Elijah Byfield to Joe Rose but the 2 point try was no good and the Bulldogs grabbed a 6-0 lead. Little did we know that this would be the only time the Bulldogs would find the end zone as Gordonsville would add three touchdowns and take a 21-6 lead at halftime. The big play in the quarter was a 79 yard interception that was returned for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs were playing this game without starting quarterback Hunter Kirk who could not play due to injury. The Bulldogs had to insert Elijah Byfield into the quarterback position, a familiar spot because Elijah had started the first 3 games at this position.
The Tigers would go on to add three touchdowns in the third quarter and the PAT for all 6 touchdowns. With both teams using backups there was no points scored in the fourth quarter.
Here are some stats from this game: the Bulldogs rushed for a total of 148 yards on 47 carries, the Bulldogs completed 4 passes for a total of 48 yards, the Bulldogs turned the ball over only one time against a very good team, the Bulldogs compiled 196 total yards for the game while holding the Tigers to 263 total yards.
Some individual stats on the defensive side for the Bulldogs was: Joaquin Mejia had 2 tackles plus 3 assists and a fumble recovery, Billy York had 3 tackles plus 2 assists, Dalton Thompson had 3 tackles plus 2 assists, Dustin and his brother Justin Bergdorff had 5 tackles between them along with 3 assists, Jordan Powell had 2 tackles plus 1 assist, Elijah Byfield along with Lee Pruitte and Billy York each had 3 tackles, Anthony Kramer had 2 tackles.
The Football season has come to a close. It was a season that some thought the Bulldogs would not be able to finish, but finish they did. A big reason for this accomplishment in large part is due to the hard work of trainer Rachel Hester who performed miracles getting these kids back on the practice field so they could play come Friday night. Next year looks to be a rebuilding year but if this stall stays together then the Bulldogs will live to fight on.
