Arvid Allen Austin, age 78

Arvid Allen Austin, age 78, of Lafayette, Tenn., passed away Fri., Jan. 30, 2009, at the Macon County General Hospital. Funeral services for Arvid Allen Austin were conducted Mon., Feb. 2, 2009 from the Alexander Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jackie Stagner officiating.

Ricky Meador, Mikie Meador, Robby Meador, Greg Austin, Todd Austin, Barry Montgomery, Shane Reed, and Shawn Scruggs served as pallbearers. Interment followed in the Macon County Memorial Gardens. Arvid Allen Austin was born on, Wed., Oct. 8, 1930, in Macon County, Tenn. He was the son of the late Willie Smith Austin and the late Beatrice Krantz Austin, the oldest of four children. He was married to Marie Scruggs on June 28, 1969, sharing thirty-nine years together; Marie survives.  Arvid joined the United States Navy in 1950 before he could be drafted into the Army, and he served his country in the Pacific during the Korean War from 1950-1954. He then worked for Imperial Reading Corporation in Lafayette, he was one of the first people hired; he was the Cutting Department Manager until the plant closed in 1979. Arvid then became the cutting department manager at Lafayette Apparel for the next fifteen years before he retired. Arvid had many years of service to his country as a member of the VFW and American Legion, and served his community as a member of the Macon County Board of Education for twelve years. He was saved when he was a teenager at the old McFarland Hospital in Lebanon, Tennessee while he was a patient for an appendectomy. He joined Fairview Missionary Baptist Church in 1970 where he remained a faithful member until death. He loved his family, and his grandchildren were a great joy to him especially during these last months. He had many buddies in this life that will miss him greatly, but he is at home today with the best friend of all, our Savior. Besides his wife, he is survived by; sons, David (Peggy) Austin, Chris (Amy) Austin, all of Lafayette, Tenn., daughter, DeCheryl (Gary) Swindle of Portland, Tenn., brother, George (Sandra) Austin, sisters, Rachel Dotson, Ruth (Gordon) Meador, grandchildren, Kyfer Austin, and Eli Austin all of Lafayette, Tenn., step-grandchildren, Rachel Swindle and Jake Swindle of Portland, Tenn., Nolan Cooper of Lafayette, Tenn., step-great-grandchildren, Morgan and Garrett Tuttle of Lafayette, Tenn.
