Maude Brown, 100
Maude Brown, age 100, of Carthage, longtime resident of the Defeated Creek Community, passed away Fri., March 6, 2009 at the Smith County Health Care Center. Funeral services were conducted Mon., March 9 by Eld. Michael Besbitt and Bro. Jimmy Gregory from the Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home.
Born Maude Evelyn Sircy in Jackson County on April 6, 1908, one of 11 children and the last surviving child of the late Luther and Lassie Ann Sircy. She is preceded in death by her twin brother, Mack Sircy, Stafford “Staff” Sircy, Ed, Ervin, and Mitchell Sircy, Stanton ‘High Pocket” Sircy, Clellie Anderson, Dossie Reece, Elvie Matthews and an infant who died at birth. She was married in 1932 to Fred Jewel Brown of Kempville and he preceded her in death on April 26, 1981 at the age of 70. Mrs. Brown along with her husband Fred owned and operated Brown’s Grocery in both Kempville and Defeated Creek and Mr. Brown owned and operated the Brown’s Discount Tire Store in Defeated Creek, which is now Powell’s Tire Store. Children preceding her in death are Carol L. Brown,62, Mack “Chigger” Brown, 39, Melba Kemp, 44 and granddaughter, Sandy Dawn Green. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Peyton Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Monoville. She is survived by a daughter Paula Brown of Carthage; four grandchildren, Glennie and Chase Green, Meredith Gibbs and Kathy Kemp; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.
