Nancy Cora Ellis Barnfield was born on July 22, 1914 in Macon County, TN she was one of eight children born to the late Morgan and Martha Nash Ellis.
Nancy was married to Cordell Barnfield on January 2, 1938, sharing fifty-eight wonderful years together, Cordell preceded her in death on April 2, 1996. They were blessed with two children, Jerry Rundall Barnfield and June Barnfield Brawner. Besides Nancy’s husband and parents; four brothers, Charlie Ellis, Hobert Ellis, Homer Ellis, and Wisman Ellis, three sisters, Mamie Cothron, Hettie Chaffin, and Hassie Russell, also preceded her in death.
Nancy was saved by God’s amazing grace on December 28, 1981 and joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church on January 3, 1982, when she was 67 years old. She waited a long time to get in the right shape for God but when she got it, she was shouting for days. She loved going to church and enjoyed her salvation and church family up until her final breath.
Mama Nancy also truly enjoyed spending time with her family and while she was able she loved to go riding with her sister Mamie and her niece Joyce every Saturday. They would all sing their favorite church songs and enjoyed their time together. She also loved having her family and friends visit with her and on several occasions, she could be caught putting her puzzles together in some pretty unique positions. She was known to be pretty outspoken and always said exactly what she thought, sometimes whether you wanted to or not. Later on, after she made Knollwood her home, she loved sitting outside, talking and cutting up with the nurses there, and playing Bingo on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
Whether you knew her as Mother, Auntie, Mama, Nancy, Mammie or simply as Nan, she will be dearly missed by those of us who truly, truly loved her. Those nightly visits to put her in bed and saying “Good Night, I love you and see you tomorrow” will always be a fond memory we will treasure forever. However, we know without a doubt that she is in a far better Kingdom now than any of us and we wouldn’t dream of asking her to come back. Now she’s waiting for us to come meet her again in heaven. She is survived by; Son, Jerry and wife Juanita Barnfield of Smyrna, TN, Daughter, June and husband Glen Brawner of Lafayette, TN, brother-in-law, Billy Barnfield of Lafayette, TN, 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nieces, and nephews.
