A highly decorated Korean War P.O.W., Mr. Robert Hibdon age 79 of Clarksville, died Tuesday afternoon December 1, 2009 at his Lincoln Street home.
A highly decorated Korean War P.O.W., Mr. Robert Hibdon age 79 of Clarksville, died Tuesday afternoon December 1, 2009 at his Lincoln Street home. He was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon December 4th from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Mr. Hibdon’s brother-in-law, Eld. James Shoulders, and Eld. Frankie Kirby officiated at the 1:00 p.m. services. Burial with full military honors followed in the Hibdon family lot at Dixon Springs Cemetery. The Hibdon family received friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Friday after 10:00 a.m.
Born Robert East Hibdon on June 7, 1930 in the Hillsdale Community of Macon County, he was one of three children of the late Frank and Dona Gann Hibdon and was reared in Dixon Springs and educated in the Smith County School System.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Hibdon, and a nephew, Frankie Pulley.
On September 15, 1972 in Clarksville, he was married to Cato Community native, Sylvia Ruth Shoulders.
Mr. Hibdon proudly served his country with the United States Army in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War for total service time of thirty years and three months. He was a Prisoner of War for thirty-two months and twenty-one days and was released in 1953. Mr. Hibdon was honorably discharged on October 31, 1978 with the rank of E-6 Sergeant.
Medals and awards received during his tenure of service include the National Defense Service Medal 1st OLC, seven Good Conduct Medals, Combat Infantryman Badge, safe driver badge, RVN Campaign Medal W/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal W/4 Campaign Stars, eight Overseas Service Bars, Army Japan Occupation Medal, ten Service Stripes, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Hibdon was a member of the Williams Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Adams, TN.
Surviving in addition to his wife over thirty-seven years is his son, Jimmie Ray Hibdon and wife Sharon of Newburgh, Indiana; sister, Katherine Cook of Nashville; step-children, Jackie Davis and wife Dianne of Riceville, TN, Ryan Samblin of Athens, TN, Marsh Ramsey of Clarksville, TN; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
