Funeral services for John Robert Cowley were conducted Thurs. from the chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with James Buttrey officiating. Petie Haley, Eugene Hurt, Andy Morgan,k Ronnie Hackett, and Lee Breedlove served as honorary pallbearers. Eric Ramsey, Chad Ramsey, Jeff Hackett, Robert Breedlove, Lee Breedlove, Jr., Anthony Morgan, John Breedlove, and Darrell Morgan served as active pallbearers. Interment followed in the Cowley Family Cemetery.

He was born in Davidson County, TN on Sept. 2, 1923 to the late Lee and Emma Forehand Cowley. Besides his parents; one son, Arnold Cowley, granddaughter, Stephenie Ramsey, brother, Dixie Cowley, sisters, Martha Littlebridge, Elizabeth Walpole, and Nancy Mullins, also preceded his in death. John married the love of his life Erma Mae Clay Cowley on December 13, 1946, sharing sixty-three years together and raised one son and five daughters; Erma survives.
He worked building houses most all his life, as a carpenter, until he retired. Farming was his second job and what he enjoyed, whether being on his tractor in the fields or with a hoe in his hand, this made him happy. John was a hardworking man, who made sure that the needs of his family were meet. His great care for his family shows greatly by the love and respect his family has for him. His children remember most of all, their father whistling gospel songs as he worked. He liked to watch sports and westerns on the television; he also liked to read westerns. John like baseball and play the sport for many years. He enjoyed grilling out and having gatherings with the kids and grandkids. John and Erma had one granddaughter “Sissy” that had special needs, they helped their daughter take care of her and saw that she had what she needed. He was a member of Dixon Creek Church of Christ. John will be greatly missed by his loving family and all who knew him. Besides his wife, He is survived by; daughters, Rita and husband Ronnie Hackett of Lafayette, TN, Delores and husband Lee Breedlove of Westmoreland, TN, Arlyne and husband Jerry White of Lafayette, TN, Darlyne Breedlove of Nashville, TN, and Donna Kay Morgan of Lebanon, TN, brothers, Harry Cowley, and Fred Cowley both of Lebanon, TN, sisters, Dorothy Huston of Hendersonville, TN, and Sue Hrusosky of Lebanon, TN, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews; also survive.
