Roxie Sloan, age 81, of Pleasant Shade died at 10:09 p.m. Monday evening, May 10, 2010 at the Smith County Health Care Center in Carthage where she had been lovingly cared for since January 19, 2001.

Eld. Chase Johnson, pastor of the Defeated Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Difficult, officiated at the 11 a.m. Thursday morning May 13th funeral services from the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside her husband at the Sanderson Cemetery at Pleasant Shade.

One of seven children of the late Mattie Harmon “M.H.” Davenport who died in 1967 and the late Allene Hankins Davenport who died in 1994, she was born Roxie Madeline Davenport in the Wartrace Community of Jackson County January 1, 1929.

A sister, Mildred Martin preceded her in death. Her husband of 21 years, Dortch Whitley Sloan, a Pleasant Shade native, died November 22, 1997. They were married September 17, 1976.

Surviving is her son, Roger Kemp and wife Elaine of Gamaliel, KY;  granddaughter, Amy Kemp of Lafayette; siblings, Martha Brooks of Carthage, Mary Carter and husband James of Tanglewood, Eld. Goldman Davenport, Hugh L. Davenport and wife Elsie all of Kirbytown Community, Robbie Gene Davenport of Sarasota, Fl.
