Funeral services for Ms. Velma Barber were conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 8th at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home, with Brother Donald Brawner officiating. Rocky Brandy, Jeff Robinson, Barry Wix, Stacy Wix, Mark Woods, Donnie Frye, Jackie Gross, and Tracy Brawner served as Pallbearers.

Interment followed in the Macon County Memorial Gardens. Velma was born in Macon County, Tennessee on June 25, 1935 to the late Arnett P. and Mallie Ann Ford Brawner. She was one of nine siblings born to this union. On April 30, 1955, she was married to Alfred Neil Barber sharing almost forty-seven years together. They were so in love, that simply being together made them happy. Shared in this union was one daughter, Janice, who they cherished and loved dearly. Alfred preceded her in death on December 22, 2001. Besides her husband and parents; a brother, T.W. Brawner, and three sisters, Beulah May Allen, Leona Robinson, and Ruby Helen Wix, also preceded her in death. She worked for local garment factories for 15 years before deciding to work from home. Velma loved children so she went into babysitting for the public, as she often would say “her babies” meant the world to her. After 15 years of babysitting, she retired. As hobbies; she enjoyed, fishing, sewing and quilting. She enjoyed being around her family and friends. She had such a great personality and would always leave you with a smile. Velma was saved as a young girl and joined Cedar Bluff Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. Velma is survived by; Daughter, Janice Barber of Smyrna, TN, Sisters, Wanda Lou (Roger) Presley, and Evell (Paul) Gross, Brothers, Donald (Shirley) Brawner, and Jerry Lynn Brawner all of Lafayette, TN, several nieces and nephews also survive.
