Grover Louis Porter, 81

 

Porter, Grover Louis (G.L., Pete) of Hendersonville, was born on November 29, 1932 to the late Don and Dorothy Porter near Hillsdale, Macon Co., TN. His brother and sisters are: Lenora (Porter) Gammon, the late Bobby Gene Porter, Peggy (Porter) Williams and Linda Porter. G.L. graduated from Macon County High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division and later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Marketing from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, his Master of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and his Ph.D. in Business Management with an emphasis in Accounting from Louisiana State University. G.L. married Dorothy Ann (Smith) Porter on Dec. 17, 1955. Their children are: Venice (David) Edmonds, Don Lee (Becky) Porter and Jon Paul Porter; grandchildren: Krista Edmonds and Mason Johnson. G.L. was a Professor of Accounting and taught Management Accounting, Ethics and numerous other Accounting classes during his 50-year career at several leading universities. He was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), Professor of Accounting and a Real Estate Broker. He was a member and past Chairman of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), and received the TSCPA Lifetime Achievement in Accounting Education in 2001. He was a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Committee on Professional Ethics, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), Financial Executives International (FEI), Alabama Society of CPA’s, and American Legion. He was elected President of the National Association of Accountants in April 1978 and served on the IMA Committee on Ethics and Foundation for Applied Research. G.L. has written numerous articles published in many professional accounting and weight lifting magazines as well as local newspapers. G.L. has been a world traveler throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013, 11 a.m. at Hendersonville First Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Luther officiating.  Interment will be in Andersons and Son Cemetery, LaFayette, TN. Active pallbearers will be Richard Gammon, Robert Gammon, Andrew Gammon, Bryan Nichols, Randy Porter, Frank Reid Smith, Jon Paul Porter, and Mason Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Reid Smith, Dr. John P. Greer, Dr. David E. Hansen, Rev. Courtney Wilson, and Dr. Edgar F. Prasthofer. Visitation will be Thursday, January 24, 2013, 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Hendersonville First Baptist Church and Saturday, January 26, 2013, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alive Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
