Carl Harwood West, 90

Carl Harwood West was born in the Galen Community in Macon County, Tennessee on February 8, 1923 to the late Joel Houston West and Marion Elizabeth Harwood West. He served in the United States Army during World War II.  Carl had several army acquaintances and they would meet every year for a reunion. He enjoyed being with his old army buddies very much. Carl was saved before he went into the army but he never told it until, he returned home from the war. Carl joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where he remains a member. On December 22, 1951, Carl married the former Dena Mae Driver, sharing sixty-one years together. They raised two daughters; Patricia and Anita. Carl loved get-togethers, and spending time with family and friends. He was employed by the Hartsville Nuclear Plant working there until he retired, in the early 90’s. Farming ran deep in Carl’s veins, and you could find him most of the time on the farm working. Carl enjoyed raising tobacco crops, raising gardens, and cutting hay. He also had several head of cattle that he took care of. Nothing made Carl happier than to see one of his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, sitting on his Ford tractor. Besides his parents; sisters, Mabel East Swindle, Katherine Driver, Lucille Swindle, and Jewell East, brothers, Leon East and Charles Edward West also preceded Carl in death. On July 19, 2013, at the age of 90, the Lord called this old plow boy home. Even though it is a great loss to Carl’s family and friends, it is Heaven’s gain. Funeral services for Carl West were conducted Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 2 pm from the Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Dean Sircy and Elder Walter Andrews officiating.  Phillip Turner, Curtis Parrish, Michael Tucker, John Michael Tucker, Jeff Tucker, Bud Wright, Justin Gammon, Tenny Jones, and Steve Blankenship served as Pallbearers.
