Sammy Hire

Sammy Don Hire, beloved family man and faithful disciple of Christ, passed away on April 26, 2023, at the age of eighty-seven years, seven months, and two days. Born on September 24, 1935, Sammy lived a full life dedicated to faith and family.

Sammy was born in Lafayette to the late William “Leck” Hire and Letha Harper Hire. He was saved a young boy and Sammy was a devoted member of Pleasant Hill General Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for over fifty years. His commitment to faith was evident in all aspects of his life, and Sammy was beloved by the church family for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to God. Sammy spent thirty-eight years of his life working for Dollar General corporation, where he was highly regarded for his dedication, work ethic, and kind smile. Above all else, Sammy was a family man. In 2021, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Dora Elizabeth Shrum Hire. Though she had passed, her presence was still felt through the hand stitched creations that kept him warm. Sammy cherished the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His love and generosity knew no bounds, and his family will always remember him as a beacon of light and source of strength.

Along with his parents and loving wife, Sammy was also preceded in death by his Son-in-law, Billy Dillard; Great-Grandson, Bailey Law; Sisters, Betty Irene Boyd and Ivy Jones; and Brother, Johnny Law. Sammy leaves behind two children. Son, Ricky Hire and wife, Denise, and Daughter, Vicki Dillard. He also leaves four Grandchildren, Marty Dillard, Heather Pierce and husband, Kevin, Matthew Hire and wife, Ana, and Whitney Cheesman and husband, Bryan; nine Great- Grandchildren, Trinity, Macie, Kinsley, Embry, Audrey, Alexis, Zavier, Nate, and Rori; and Brother, Danny Hire and wife, Sylvia. When he left this world, Sammy was surrounded by the love and prayers of family and friends, but they are blessed to know he is now wrapped in the arms of Jesus.

Funeral services for Mr. Sammy Don Hire were conducted on Friday, April 28, 2023, from The Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Pete Freeman, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in The Macon County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were, Marty Dillard, Kevin Pierce, Matthew Hire, Bryan Cheesman, Embry Pierce, and Tobias Green. Audrey Peirce, Alexis Hire, Zavier Hire, Nate Cheesman, and Rori Cheesman served as Honorary Pallbearers. Alexander Funeral Home, Directors, in charge of arrangements. 615-666-2189 or
