Macon gets three big wins

The Macon County High School basketball teams got back into action this past week. They had three nights of hoop action and picked up three wins.
The week began on Monday Feb 2nd with a return matchup at Scottsville, KY against Allen County after Macon won both games at home earlier in the month. The Tigerettes saw seven or eight ties or lead changes in their first quarter and carried a 24-20 lead into the second period. However three consecutive three point baskets down the floor by the Lady Patriots propelled them to a nine point lead midway through the quarter that they never gave up. Allen County led 54-38 at the break.
The Tigerettes played hard but missed their first four shots of the third period. Allen County was able to keep their distance and lead 67-57 heading to the final period. Macon was only able to cut the lead to nine points, after being down by 17. Allen County wins the ‘Border Battle’ rematch by a final score of 84-73.
Scoring for the Tigerettes was: Katie Jo Shockley 19, Kaylee Slayton 15, Chloe Solomon 13, Allie Kate Austin 11, Savannah Keene 9, and Ariana Jones 6 points.
The boys’ game was another great contest till the last minute of regulation. Macon trailed 8-16 at the end of the first and 32-39 at halftime despite committing eight turnovers.
They battled back to trail 50-55 heading into the final quarter. The Tigers managed to make plays and led 73-68 with less than a minute to go in the contest. However three consecutive turnovers allowed the Patriots to gain the momentum and tie the game 73-73 at the end of regulation. Macon just couldn’t make plays at the end and lost 84-90.
Scoring was: McKade Mix 31 points, Jake Meador 17, Aiden Barlow 12, Braylon Marshall 12, and Brody Huffines 12 points. Gael Sanchez and Owen Gentry both played but did not score.
On the next night Tuesday Feb 3rd Macon would host their first district home game of the season against Watertown. The Purple Lady Tigers outscored the Tigerettes in every period and frankly outplayed them in all facets of the game. Macon trailed 21-28 at halftime and would go on to lose 37-56.
Scoring was: Austin 12, Slayton 8, Solomon 7, Shockley 6, Keelyn Gregory 2, and Grace Sircy 2. Keene, Jones, and Tori McClanahan all played but did not score.
The boys’ game was the exact opposite. The Tigers led from wire-to-wire and when Watertown would make a run Macon’s hustle and effort would prove to be the difference. Macon led 26-24 at the break and have as much as a 19 point lead in the second half before winning 62-46.
Scoring was: Mix 25, Barlow 12, Meador 8, Huffines 8, Marshall 7, and Sanchez 2.
Both squads would end the week with another district home game against DeKalb County. The Tigerettes went back and forth with DeKalb trailing by two at 25-27 at halftime. DeKalb only scored five points in the third quarter and Macon built a lead they never gave up. The Tigerettes win by a final score of 49-43.
Scoring was: Slayton 15, Shockley 14, Austin 8, Keene 6, and Jones 6. Solomon played but did not score.
The boys’ game was an old fashioned shootout. Both teams came out on fire shooting three pointers and DeKalb cooled off first. Macon led 33-16 at the break. But then DeKalb woke up. They shot themselves right back into the game with three pointers. Macon held on down the stretch, hitting just enough free throws to win 63-58.
Scoring was: Mix 17, Marshall 15, Barlow 14, Huffines 11, and Meador 6. Sanchez played but did not score.
This week Macon is scheduled to play at Watertown on Feb 10th and host Murfreesboro Central Magnet on Feb 13th. Both are district games and start at 6 pm.
