Couple Arrested with Meth & Fentanyl

A Red Boiling Springs couple was arrested last week following a routine traffic stop for possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
According to a report filed by a Macon County Sheriff’s Department deputy, a white Dodge truck with a broken tail light was observed traveling east on Highway 52 on the night of February 19, 2026.
A traffic stop was made on the vehicle and the driver was identified as 52-year-old Steve Newberry. The female passenger was identified as 69-year-old Pauline Johnson.
Both individuals appeared to be fidgety and failed to make eye contact with the officer.
A K-9 unit was requested at the scene and dispatch notified the deputy that Mr. Newberry had an active warrant out of Clay County for worthless checks.
Newberry was placed into custody for the warrant and a search of his person revealed 8 baggies, two gals pipes and a straw containing a white, crystal-like substance, which field-tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine.
During a search of Johnson’s person, a small container fell out of her bra. Inside the container was white crystal-like substance that also field-tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Both individuals were taken into custody and shared with possession of methamphetamine and possession of fentanyl.
Mr. Newberry was also charged with a tail light law violation.
Johnson was given a bond of $23,000 and Newberry received a bond of $20,000.
Both are scheduled to appear in general sessions court on March 4, 2026.
