RBS Teams Hold 2 District Contests with Friendship Christian

On Tuesday, February 1, 2011, the Red Boiling Springs High School Basketball teams traveled to Lebanon, TN, to face the Commanders of Friendship Christian in District 8A competition.
Friendship Christian Lady Commanders led the first quarter 18-3, and before the halftime break, the Lady Bulldogs were trailing 31-15.
Coach Larry White’s halftime talk must have helped the Lady Dawgs get their game faces on, dominating the court 16-11 in the third quarter and outscoring their opponent in the fourth quarter 23-14, with less than one minute remaining in the game, FC 56, RBS 54.
Lady Bulldog Layce Colter made two free throws with three seconds left in regulation to help Red Boiling Springs (21-4, 4-1) rally from an 18-0 deficit to force an overtime period.
In the extra session, the Lady Bulldogs outscored Friendship (15-6, 6-1) 9-4.
Heather Jenkins, led all scorers with 29 points, including four 3-pointers, followed by Layce Colter with 23 points, including three 3-pointers, Mackenzie Painter with seven points, Marina Evans with four points, and Morgan Burgener with two points.
In the boys game… The Commanders had acquired a 16-12 advantage over the Bulldogs after the first quarter of play, and by the halftime break, the Bulldogs were left trailing 37-19.
Red Boiling Springs outscored Friendship Christian in the last half of the game 17-16 in the third quarter and 17-14 in the fourth, however they fell short of the victory by a final score of 67-53.
Wes Grace led the team with 23 points, including two 3-point shots, followed by Jordan Meador with 14 points, including four 3-point shots, Jordan Grace with six points, Andrew Mullinix with four points, David Williams with three points, Shelton Watson with two points, and Aaron Francis with one point.
Game 2 with F.C.
On Thursday, February 3, 2011, the RBS teams entertained Friendship Christian for their second district meeting of the season.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to claim their second victory over the Lady Commanders with a final score of 54-31.
This game was important as far as District 8A standings are concerned.
“I thought we played really, really well tonight,” Coach White commented. “The big thing about tonight was that we were so good defensively, and we had to improve that from the Tuesday night game. We did a good job on our post game. We changed some things defensively, and that made a difference. We did not come out pressing, and that was because we had the fight of our lives on Tuesday night, and I was concerned about fatigue. But when we did start pressing, it made a huge difference in the game. Morgan Burgener battled Jones on the post, Layce Colter helped out defensively tonight, and Heather Jenkins has been unbelievable these last two games on the offensive end of the floor, and the defensive end too.”
“I hope we have gotten everything back on track and we are where we want to be. We just have to win one of two games next week, to win the regular season outright, and get the top seed. That’s our goal for the year, and our second goal of the year was to go undefeated at home. The first thing you learn in coaching, is if you win them all at home and your 500 on the road, you’ll be really good, and we’re a little better than 500 on the road. Tonight was number 22 for us. We are starting to get things lined up for the tournament, because these regular season, are just glorified scrimmage games,” Coach White laughed.
The Lady Bulldogs were led to victory with 14 points from Layce Colter, followed by Heather Jenkins with 12 points, Morgan Burgener with nine points, Mayson Burgener and Marina Evans with six points each, Katie Hix with four points, and Hannah Hollis with three points.
In the boys game… Friendship Christian stood undefeated in District 8A play, yet several times during this second challenge, the Bulldogs found themselves trailing by three points.
Bulldog Jordan Meador struck first with a 3-point shot, that was answered with 11 points from Friendship Christian. Meador then nailed another three. The end of the first quarter score held Friendship leading 13-6.
The Bulldogs battled out each moment of the second quarter, to trail 29-22 at the half.
Friendship held an 11 point advantage at the end of the third quarter, and during the last quarter of play, RBS out scored their opponent 21-14, however they were unable to achieve the five points needed to win the game. The good four-quarter fight, ended with the Commanders claiming their last District 8A challenge with a 56-52 victory over Red Boiling Springs.

RBS Hosts Pickett Co.
On Friday, February 4, 2011, the RBS teams entertained Pickett County. The Lady Bulldogs won, 59-42, and the Bulldogs were defeated 46-42.
H. Jenkins led the RBS girl’s team with 16, followed by L. Colter 15, M. Painter 10, M. Evans 4, H. Hollis 4, Mo. Burgener 3, K. Hix 3, K. Jenkins 2, and K. McCarter 2.
S. Watson led the RBS boy’s team with 12, followed by J. Meador 11, A. Mullinix 10, W. Grace 6, and A. Francis 3.
