My View from the Press Box-Smith County

  By Tim Case

  The MCHS Tigers traveled
to Carthage Friday night to take on the Smith County Owls in a non-district
rival game.  The Owls entered the game
with a 5-0 record and the Tigers 2-2.

  The Owls scored on their
opening possession driving 58 yards in 8 plays as Scurlock connects with Carr
for a 24 yard TD pass, the PAT was good and the Owls led 7-0.  The Tigers go 3 and out on their 1
st
possession and punt back to the owls.  88
yards and 6 plays later Jalen Manning finds the end zone with a 40 yard TD run.   PAT is
good Owls led 14-0.  The Tigers 2
nd
possession was another 3 and out and punt back to the owls.  Carson Cook intercepted a Scurlock at the 2
yard line to stop the owls 3
rd drive.  The Tigers gain one 1st down and
are forced to punt again.  The owls drive
40 yard in 9 plays and Manning scores his 2
nd TD from 6 yards
out.  The PAT was good, owls led
21-0.  The Tigers put together a 7 play
63 yard drive to get on the board as Grace connects with Manning on a 14 yard
TD pass. The PAT failed and the Tigers trailed 21-6.  Scurlock Throws his 2
nd
interception late in the 2
nd quarter as Stephen Kowicki stepped in
front of a screen pass and ran it back to the 8 yard line of the Owls.  Two plays later, Tyler Drown takes it in from
four yards out. Grace adds the 2pt conversion on a QB sneak, and the Tigers
trailed 21-14.  The Owls add a field goal
as time expired to end the 1
st half.
SC led 24-14.

  Both defenses hold
tough in the 3
rd quarter with no points scored.  But SC scored first in the 4th
quarter on a QB sneak by Scurlock to cap a 54 yard 8 play drive.  The PAT was good, Owls led 31-14.  Grace then finds Manning for a 39 yard TD
pass to end a 63 yard 5 play drive.  Cook
adds the PAT, MC trailed 31-21.  Late in
the game SC drove 59 yards in 10 plays to put the game out of reach as
Stevenson scored on a 6 yard TD run.  The
PAT was good and the final Score was 38-21.

  The Tigers fall to
2-3 on the season and remain 1-1 in district play.  The Tigers look to get back on track this
Friday night as they host the Greenbrier Bobcats for a District 9AA
match-up.  The Bobcats are 2-4 on the
season and 0-2 in the district standings.
Come out and cheer the Tigers
on to Victory and
“I’ll see you at the game.”
