Tigerettes Capture 9AA Tournament Title
On Feb 20th, the Macon County Tigerettes defeated Westmoreland to capture the District 9AA Tournament Title. They went on to host the first round of the Region 5AA at home.
Many Macon fans hope this team has found their way, on a road which led all the way to the TSSAA 2A finals last season. In the first quarter, the inside tandem of Katie Reid and Calamity Coley paced the Tigerettes to a 10-7 lead. Terra Pryor heated up the strings, sinking two big three pointers and Kelsey Gregory chipped in another. At the half the score was MCHS 24 WHS 10. In the third quarter points were hard to come by but Macon managed to maintain their lead at 35-21. This team was able to hold Westmoreland at bay, going 5 of 6 in the third and 6 of 10 in the fourth from the charity stripe. Once again, the bench was emptied and everyone played in the game. The Tigerettes take the tournament title by a final score of 47-26 over Westmoreland.
Scoring for Macon were: Kelsey Gregory 6, Kailyn Brooks 6, Terra Pryor 12, Katie Reid 8, Calamity Coley 11, Katelyn Bean 2, and Briley Driver 2. Reese Shrum, Whitney Wilburn, Michaela Thompson, Macy Kemp, Jade Ellis, and Leah Anderson all played but did not score.
The All-District and All-Tournament teams were announced. Kelsey Gregory, Kailyn Brooks, Terra Pryor, and Katie Reid were named All-District. Calamity Coley was named Co-MVP. Making the All-Tournament team were Coley and Pryor with Reid being named MVP. Coach Jeff Beam was named Coach of the Tournament.
Coaches Beam and Gregory may have these girls beginning to peak. As the game was a good tough, hard fought win. Fewer turnovers and smart play made this victory sweet for many of the Tigerette faithful. As the number one seed in District 9AA, the Tigerettes move on to host number four seed Hume Fogg from District 10AA. Earlier in the season MCHS beat the Blue Knights 73-23.
On Friday the 25th the first round of the Region 5AA tournament began at Nera White Gymnasium. The Tigerettes came out firing as Kailyn Brooks scored seven big points and MCHS led 17-2 after one. All five starters plus Senior Katelyn Bean were able to score in the second, and the game was well in hand. Halftime score was 39-10 Macon. The mercy rule went into effect for most of the second half and Coach Beam was able to get all his bench players in the game. The Tigerettes coast to another victory, winning 58-14 over the Blue Knights of Hume Fogg.
Scoring were: Gregory 6, Brooks 9, Pryor 6, Reid 16, Coley 7, Bean 8, Driver 2, Wilburn 1, and Anderson 2. Shrum, Thompson, Kemp, and Ellis all played but did not score.
