Macon grabs three wins this week
Regular season basketball is winding down at Macon County High School.
The push is now on for a run at the postseason and this week Macon hosted DeKalb County on Feb 2nd and Central Magnet on Feb 5th.
The Tigerettes met the Lady Tigers of DeKalb County on Tuesday at Nera White Gymnasium. Despite sloppy play by Macon with a number of turnovers, they led 12-9 after the first and 27-23 at the half. For the second game in a row, the worst thing for the team was a break in the action. In the third quarter the Tigerettes imploded with an inability to score or even get the ball up the court. DeKalb fixed their problems and made 4 more baskets on 8 more shots than the Tigerettes did. These girls played hard from behind in the 4th quarter, but with only six players available to play, it makes for some rough sledding. Final score Macon 43 DeKalb 55.
Scoring for the Tigerettes was: Jenna Russell 5, Kassidy Brooks 5, Kyndal Bullington 6, Mattie Goolsby 14, Lyndsey Q. Belton 10, and Kaylynn Dalton 3. Mallory Owens played but did not score.
The Tigers looked to keep momentum from the overtime victory in Livingston three days before. Dekalb managed to play with the Macon for about a quarter and a half. However the athleticism which held DeKalb to only 5 points in the second quarter, and gave the Tigers a 29-16 halftime lead, was simply too much to overcome. The Tigers pick up their 7th district win by a final score of 56-37.
Scoring was: Tyler Carlisle 17, Michael Ashburn 15, Seth Carlisle 9, Heston King 5, Clay Carnahan 3, Matt Austin 3, Trace McPherson 2, and Riley Phillips 2. Cameron Welch, Cole Carnahan, and Trent Cook all played but did not score.
Friday night Feb 5th was senior night and ten members of the Class of 2016 were recognized. The Tigerettes came out shooting 25% from the field but rebound on an 11 point second quarter from Belton. Macon led 18-10 at the half with all the momentum. The Tigerettes came out and took care of business as Belton posted another 11 point quarter. Just to show how hard these girls have played this season, with a shortened 6 girl team and each one playing in the final period, the Tigerettes were able to shoot 12 of 17 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter to expand their lead. Final score Macon 49 Central Magnet 25.
Scoring was: Russell 9, Brooks 2, Bullington 2, Goolsby 9, and Belton 27. Dalton played but did not score.
The Tigers were looking to avenge a terrible loss a month ago in a game they will look back on heading into the post season. Magnet looked like they might repeat, trailing Macon 8-11 after one and 18-21 at the break. Macon came to life with an 8-0 run midway thru the 3rd and led 38-24 heading into the final quarter. Macon would cruise and Coach Welch was able to empty his bench enroute to a 59-39 Tiger victory.
Scoring was: S. Carlisle 18, Austin 9, Clay Carnahan 9, Ashburn 7, T. Carlisle 6, McPherson 5, Welch 3, and Phillips 2. Kade Allen, Kelton Ballou, Cole Carnahan, Trent Cook, King, Clay West, and Matt Austin all played but did not score.
In the final week of the regular season Macon is scheduled to travel to York for an afternoon game on Tuesday Feb 9th and head to Smith County on Feb 11th. The game against the Owls will be very big for the Tigers, as they could possibly move up in the post season tournament seeding to be held in Cookeville in two weeks.
