A Decision about the Macon County Fair

By Mark Darnell

The members of the Macon County Fair Board met on Thursday Jun 4 to make a decision about the 2020 Macon County Fair.

Members of the board voted to “postpone” the fair pending the government’s guidelines on gatherings of people in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. “If the governor’s guidelines will allow it we plan on holding a demolition derby later in the fall and we also hope to have a type of “Ag Day” for the kids and people with livestock,” said Macon County Fair Manager Greg White. “Both of these events will only take place if guidelines allow for them.”

White also commented that since the County Commission had said that all county offices would be limited until at least July 31, and with this year’s fair scheduled to open on August 1st (the next day), the fair board didn’t feel that they would have enough time to get ready.

Many other counties are taking similar actions. Both Wilson and Putnam counties have cancelled their fairs, which are two of the larger ones in this area. However, Smith County has their “Fair on the River” scheduled for July 1 through July 6, 2020.
