K-9 Assists in Traffic Stop, Drugs Found

A Macon County drug K-9 assisted Lafayette Police in a traffic stop last week, resulting in two arrests.
According to the affidavit of complaint filed by arresting officer Justin Bergdorff, he was on patrol on September 24, 2021 when he spotted a vehicle traveling on Main St. with a tag light out. The vehicle was seen leaving a house known for illegal drug activity by local authorities.
Upon approaching the driver’s window, Officer Bergdorff identified the driver as 50-year-old Oscar Hauskins. Mr. Hauskins was unable to provide proof of insurance at the time of the traffic stop.
Two female subjects were also located in the vehicle. The female passenger in the backseat was identified as 31-year-old Amber Cardwell.
Macon County Detective Jacob McClard and K-9 Otto, were called to the scene. Otto was deployed and gave a positive indiction for drugs inside the vehicle.
A search was conducted by officers, which resulted in the discovery of a pipe and an orange tin can in the center console containing a white, crystallized substance consistent with methamphetamine.
A purse in the backseat contained a scale with a white residue on it and 54 clear, plastic baggies.
A black pouch was also found in the backseat area containing a package of rolling papers, a pair of brass knuckles, seven Hydrocodone pills, approximately 2.43 grams of a crystalized substance believed to be methamphetamine, a scale with white residue on it, one rolled joint weighing approximately .48 grams, approximately 3.3 grams of a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana and 15 clear, plastic baggies.
Mr. Hauskins took ownership of the contents in the center console. Ms. Cardwell advised officers that the purse was hers. Due to the location of the black pouch, officers determined it to be Ms. Cardwell’s as well.
Cardwell was charged with manufacturing narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, weapon prohibited, manufacture/deliver/possess methamphetamine, possession of a Schedule II drug, and possession of a Schedule VII drug. Her bond was set at $15,000. Hauskins was charged with manufacturing narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $12,000. They are both scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on November 10, 2021.
