Caverna scores with 16 seconds to beat Bulldogs
The Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs played their game at Caverna High School last Friday night and things went back and forth before Caverna scored a touchdown with only 16 seconds left in the game.
All 13 Caverna fans stood and screamed for their team. What a game the Bulldogs played only to see Caverna drive 65 yards in four plays to pull out a victory over a cold Red Boiling springs football team.
This game was filled by mistakes by both teams but the Bulldog youth once again proved costly. Fast forward to the fourth quarter and with four minutes left the Bulldogs trailed 30-26 after scoring a touchdown. The Bulldogs were successful with an onside kick and drove down to the Caverna five yard line. On 4th down Bulldog quarterback Aubry Link found Wide out Dalton Dallas for a Bulldog touchdown to give the visitors the lead 32-30 with 2:28 left in the game.
The Bulldog fans were excited that a win was within reach with just one final stop left to get the win. The Bulldogs kicked the ball out of bounds and Caverna took over on their own 35 yard line and it was no surprise to see the Colonels offense run the ball. They attacked the Bulldogs left side of their defensive line and the final 45 yards was the same play they had run all night long. Once again the Colonels ran the ball to the Bulldog defensive left side and there was no one there to stop them. Touchdown and a two point conversion for the Colonels and the clock showed 16:9 seconds left in the game. Caverna wins the game 38-32.
The Bulldogs fans numbered about 65 and the sound of silence told the story. The Bulldogs played their hearts out but victory once again belonged to their opponents. The Bulldogs are off this week and maybe some of their injured players can return for the Gordonsville game on Oct.21st.
Stats for the game include the following: Link passing 12 of 19 for 179 yards and an interception. Tyler Lancaster rushed for 13 times for 79 yards, Dalton Dallas had 56 yards on nine carriers and a TD. Chris Hackney caught seven passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
On the defensive side Jordan Ray had seven tackles, Landen Monroe had six while Kelby Wheeler had six and one forced fumble. Tobin Sellers, Tanner Davis, Michael Hackney plus Damien Patterson also played very well for the Bulldogs.
I would like to correct a wrong from a few years back. I incorrectly published that ‘Tony Raines’ had been inducted into the RBS football HOF when in fact it was ‘Dale Raines.’ He still helps out with the program and I wanted to correct my mistake.
