Mark Alton Shrum, age 53, of Lafayette, TN passed away Thursday, November 19, at the White House Assistant Living Center in Lafayette.

 


Mark Alton Shrum, age 53, of Lafayette, TN passed away Thursday, November 19, at the White House Assistant Living Center in Lafayette. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 22, at 1 p.m., from the gym at Macon County High School with Elder Terry Hagan officiating. All Coaches from the surrounding area served as Honorary Pallbearers.  Keith Nichols, Tony Tuck, Troy Griggs, Bob Fitzpatrick, Dustin Mason, Mack Watson, Alex Shrum, Matt Jones, and Mason Jones served as active pallbearers. Interment followed in the Akersville Cemetery.

He was born on May 18, 1956 in Clay County, TN, to his parents; Clifton Shrum and the late Winona Joyce Butler Shrum.  On January 10, 1974, Mark married the former Lynn Franklin, sharing thirty-five years together and raising one son and one daughter, Lynn survives.  Besides his mother; brother, David Wayne Shrum, also preceded him in death.

Growing up, Mark was a football player, No. 40, for Macon County High School. While playing at MCHS his team was the first, to ever go undefeated in a football season. After high school, he continued on to Tennessee Tech playing football and graduating with Teaching Credentials.  Mark went to work for the Macon County Board of Education as a teacher at Macon County High School where he had taught for nineteen years, coached football for fourteen years, and coached the girls’ high school soft ball team for four years. Mark was a dedicated teacher and coach that loved his work and will be greatly missed by former and present students at Macon County High School. Since 1979, he had also owned Championship Trophies in Lafayette.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles and farming, he had several animals on his farm, such as chickens, horses, and goats, but being out on his tractor made his day. His life revolved around his friends, family and especially his grandson.  He was saved at a young age at Union Camp Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Akersville Missionary Baptist Church, where he became a deacon of the church and was a dedicated member until his health began to fail him. Mark will be greatly missed by his family, students, and friends.           

Besides his wife, Lynn, he is survived by; Son, Derrick and Fiancé Erin Brown of Lafayette, TN, Daughter, Dana and husband Russ Winkler of Lebanon, TN, Father, Clifton Shrum of Lafayette, TN, Brother, Phillip Dean and wife Jill Shrum of Goodlettsville, TN, Sisters, Marilyn and husband Billy Randolph of Antioch, TN, Priscilla and husband Patrick Watson of Brentwood, TN, One Grandson, Logan McClain Winkler, and dedicated friend until the end, Bob Fitzpatrick of Lafayette, TN.
