Retired Carthage businesswoman Mrs. Eliza Gregory age 79 of Carthage died at 4:11 p.m. Tuesday afternoon Sep. 28 at Macon County General Hospital following and extended illness.

Funeral Services were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon Oct. 2. Eld. Michael Nesbitt and Eld. Jerry Shrum officiated at the 1 p.m. services and burial followed in the Will Gregory Cemetery at Sycamore Valley. The daughter of the late Columbus Joshua “Lum” Oliver and Betty Smith Oliver, she was one of their five children and was born Eliza Bell Oliver in Pleasant Shade on Dec. 18, 1930. Two siblings preceded her in death, Vestal Oliver and Dorothy Oliver Carver. On May 10, 1947 Mrs. Gregory was united in marriage to Sycamore Valley native George Allen Gregory who preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1981 after just over thirty years of marriage. For over twenty three years Mrs. Gregory was in jewelry business in Carthage. She began with Harrison and Morgan Jewelers on April 17, 1969 and worked there until 1980 when she purchased the then Harrison Jewelers and continues operating the business until retiring in May of 1992. Mrs. Gregory was a member of the Bide Russell Missionary Baptist Church at Riddleton. Surviving is her only child, Janie Gregory Owen and husband B.L. of Tanglewood, granddaughter, Ashley Kemp of Riddleton; sister, Velma Shrum and husband Floyd of Lafayette; brother, Kenneth Oliver and wife Dot Olvier of Murfreesboro. The pallbearers were: Lowell Smith, Paul Oliver, Dan Oliver, Jerry Shrum, Randy Carver, Billy Carver, Jimmy Rigsby, and John Smith.
