Besides his parents; brothers, Grover, Mitchell, Norman, and Lloyd Shrum, sisters, Blossom Harp, Lilly Bradley, Nellie West, Mary Oliver, Altha Jenkins, Lena Jones, Ethel Shrum, and Lorene Day, also preceded him in death. He married Velma Doise Oliver on March 13, 1936, sharing 74 wonderful years together, Velma survives. They raised two daughters and a son. In Floyd’s young days he enjoyed hunting and he was the life of the party where ever he was. He had a great sense of humor that remained with him until death. His home was very important to him and visitors were always welcomed with open arms. Neighbors would sometime say the Shrums have more company than anyone they had ever seen. During his retirement years he enjoyed keeping his yard and making a garden not only for his household but for the neighbors and family. In his early adult life he was a farmer, raising corn, tobacco and hay for his cattle. In the winter months he would work in the log woods. Later in life he worked for the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation retiring when he was 70 years old. Floyd was saved by God’s wonderful grace at Sycamore Valley Missionary Baptist Church when he was a young man. He then united with that church body and remained a faithful member until death. He believed in the value of prayer and his favorite place to pray was on his bed at night. He and his good wife attended revivals meetings and gospel singing all over middle Tennessee and Kentucky. Velma loved to cook and he loved to eat. Every meal always seemed to be his best one and he always wanted people to eat with him. He adored his wife, children, grandchildren, great and great great-grandchildren and his family appreciated and loved him. He enjoyed playing the guitar. At family gatherings he would often entertain every one picking and singing. He and his wife would sing together and they would look at each other in a special way that left no doubt of their love. During his illness the gentleness and kindness of this gentle man truly showed a man of great faith. He will be missed by all who knew him and but our loss is heavens gain.
