Macon jumps into second half of 8AA Action

The basketball programs at Macon County High School are set for the second half push in District 8AA competition.

This past week the Tigers and Tigerettes played at Central Magnet and against York Institute.

On Tuesday January 12th Macon traveled to Murfreesboro to play Central Magnet. The Tigerettes have been playing some decent basketball lately. These young ladies are providing faithful Blue and White fans some extremely competitive games. Macon shoots 5 of 11 from the field and grabs a 15-12 lead after one. The Tigerettes are able to hold Magnet scoreless in the 2nd and have a 29-12 lead at the half. Despite mediocre shooting in the second half, the Tigerettes are able to do just enough to hold off the Lady Tigers of Magnet. The Tigerettes get their first district win by a final score of 50-44.

Scoring for the Tigerettes was: Jenna Russell 2, Kassidy Brooks 19, Kyndal Bullington 14, Luci Allen 6, Kaylynn Dalton 7, Keeley Clariday 1, and Mattie Goolsby 1.

Sometimes you eat bear, and sometimes the bear eats you. The Tigers did not have one of their best games of the season. They trailed 6-8 after the 1st and 11-17 at the half. I believe an 11 point half is a season low for the Tigers and sometimes good teams have to create their own luck and get the ball in the basket. Macon was able to pull with-in four points 29-33 heading into the final period. However, a 5:15 minute scoring drought to begin the final period, where Macon shoots 0 for 7 from the field, pretty much seals their fate. Magnet pulls away and gets the win by a final score of 52-35.

Scoring for the Tigers was: Riley Phillips 10, Michael Ashburn 10, Cameron Welch 6, Seth Carlisle 5, Heston King 2, Trace McPherson 2. Clay Carnahan, Tyler Carlisle, and Matt Austin played but did not score.

The Dragons of York Institute made the trek along Hwy 52 on Friday January 15th. The Tigerettes season of pain continues as they are down to only five players available for this game and that is with the return of Senior Lyndsey Belton, who was injured earlier in the season. So the depleted Tigerettes fought hard trailing 9-12 after one and 20-22 at the half. This group of girls had not played together much and some were playing roles they haven’t played much. Poor shooting and many turnovers by Macon kept the Lady Dragons in the lead. The Tigerettes showed some real grit and never quit playing the whole game. They simply had a butter knife to compete in a gun battle. They drop an important 8AA game by a final score of Macon 54 York 60.

Scoring was: Russell 13, Brooks 3, Bullington 12, Clariday 11, and Belton 15. Goolsby played but did not score.

Following a holiday push, the Tigers might be trending in the wrong direction. Sloppy play, turnovers, and absolutely no team chemistry led to a lack-luster performance. The Tigers scored an abysmal 8 points in the first and were in a hole they never came out of. Even though they out-shot the Dragons (55% to 44% in the game), they simply could not score in crucial moments nor get a stop in those same opportunities. The Tigers did get it to a 48-54 deficit at the end of the 3rd period, but the Dragons simply made plays. Final score York 71 Macon 58.

Scoring was: Tyler Carlisle 13, Ashburn 10, McPherson 9, Seth Carlisle 9, Welch 6, Cole Carnahan 5, King 4, Phillips 1, and Austin 1. Kade Allen, Clay West, Trent Cook, Clay Carnahan, and Matt Young all played but did not score.

This week Macon will host Smith County on Tuesday Jan 19th and travel to Livingston Academy on Friday Jan 22nd for two more 8AA contests. Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 6 pm.
