Tigers Win Again in Overtime
Macon County played three district games this week against Cannon County, Upperman, and Livingston.
Once again the Tigers won a thriller over Livingston in overtime.
On Tuesday Jan 26th Macon County hosted Cannon County. The Tigerettes have once again been bitten with another player being injured, so as one came back another got hurt and it left them with only six players to dress for the game. Macon played well and led 10-7 after the first and 18-13 at the half. However the worst thing that may have happened to them was the break. After Macon built the lead to seven points the Lady Lions went on a 15 point scoring run. The Tigerettes never could overcome this deficit and looked to partially run out of gas late. For the first time the diminished roster seemed to effect the outcome of the game. Macon gets handed another loss by a final of 39-45 as these young ladies soldier on.
Scoring was: Jenna Russell 5, Kassidy Brooks 4, Kyndall Bullington 10, Mattie Goolsby 5, and Lyndsey T. Belton 15. Mallory Owens played but did not score.
The Tigers picked up yet another 8AA win over the Lions. After leading 17-9 after one period, everything they did was gold. Macon outscored Cannon 25-15 in the second quarter both down low and behind the arc to take a halftime lead of 42-24. Now someone forgot to tell Cannon that the game was over and they came roaring back, mainly aided by multiple 3 point made baskets. They cut the Macon lead to 52-45 heading into the final period. The Tigers were able to take care of business, hitting 6 of 9 free throws down the stretch. Final score Macon 76 Cannon Co 65.
Scoring was: Tyler Carlisle 19, Trace McPherson 17, Seth Carlisle 15, Clay Carnahan 10, Michael Ashburn 6, Heston King 4, Cameron Welch 3, and Riley Phillips 2. Matt Austin played but did not score.
On Friday the 29th Macon traveled to Baxter to face Upperman. The Tigerettes get back another player to bring their roster to seven varsity girls dressed. Macon trailed 14-25 after one and 24-48 at halftime. The #3 ranked AA girls team in the state made short work of the Tigerettes. They trailed 39-70 after three and lose by a final score of 47-77.
Scoring was: Russell 2, Brooks 19, Bullington 11, Goolsby 5, Belton 2, and Kaylynn Dalton 8. Owens played but did not score.
Now Upperman and Macon were squaring off for what could be the possible #1 seed heading into District 8AA tournament. The Bees have also been highly ranked in the state AA boys rankings. Macon held it fairly close at 11-17 after the first period. However, they went 0 for their first 9 shots down the court in the 2nd quarter, remaining scoreless for the first 4:30 of the period. At the break Upperman led 32-16. The Tigers never could overcome this deficit and lost by a final score of 52-68.
Scoring was: S. Carlisle 22, McPherson 9, Ashburn 6, T. Carlisle 6, Carnahan 5, Phillips 2, and King 2. Austin played but did not score. Macon was 22 of 73 from the field for the game.
On Saturday Jan 30th Macon travelled to Livingston to make-up a game snowed out last week. The Lady Wildcats were a little sluggish in the first quarter but came on to hold a 32-16 lead at the half. Livingston pulled away in the second half as the Tigerettes were just beaten by a better team. Final score Livingston 55 Macon 39.
Scoring was: Russell 4, Brooks 7, Bullington 6, Goolsby 14, Belton 5, and Owens 3. Dalton played but did not score.
The first time these boys teams met, Macon gutted out a seven period overtime win at home. Most fans viewed this as a must win for both teams. The Tigers led 15-13 after one. Macon had a 7 point lead early in the quarter when the Wildcats went on a run to steal all the momentum. At the half LA led 37-32. Give the Tigers some credit as they never quit. Down 42-48 heading into the final period, they clawed back to tie the game and take a 60-55 lead with 3:43 left. Both teams would have opportunities but miss and we would head into overtime tied 63 all. The Tigers would make 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch and simply make shots when Livingston missed to pull out a big district win. Final score Macon 71 Livingston 68.
Scoring was: S. Carlisle 20, McPherson 13, Ashburn 12, T. Carlisle 12, Austin 11, and Carnahan 3. King and Phillips played but did not score.
This week Macon will host DeKalb County on Tuesday Feb 2nd and Central Magnet on Friday Feb 5th. Tip-off for the girls is set at 6 pm.
