Bulldogs roll over Sunbright


The Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs football team played their final game of the 2022 season last Friday night against Sunbright and the stands were full of Bulldogs fans hoping to see the Bulldogs get a much needed victory.

A 47-13 whipping of Sunbright sent the fans home happy and this win sends the Bulldogs to the playoffs as they must travel to Chattanooga to face South Pittsburg who finished their season Friday night with a 63-20 win over Cooper Basin.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring against Sunbright as Bulldog quarterback Aubry Link found wide out Chris Hackney in the end zone for a touchdown of 21 yards and the point-after was good and a 7-0 lead for the Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs intercepted a pass Link drove the Bulldogs down to the 29 yard line and he threw a bullet to Joe Birdwell for the Bulldogs touchdown of 31 yards and a 14-0 lead with 9:46 left in the second quarter. The home crowd was getting into this game.

On the Bulldogs next possession Link drove the Bulldogs down to the Sunbright two yard line where Link ran the final two yards for a Bulldog touchdown. The point-after was no good but the Bulldogs were leading this game 20-0 with 1:41 left before halftime. Sunbright showed some life and scored a touchdown on a 65 yard pass that surprised the home crowd. It was a 20-7 score at halftime. Defensive lineman Tobin Sellers dominated the first half with two sacks and four tackles for losses.

The Bulldogs came out running the ball to start the third quarter and marched down to the 31 yard line of Sunbright where Link found Dalton Dallas open at the 10 yard line where Dallas dove into the end zone for a Bulldog touchdown. The extra point was good and a 27-7 lead favored the home team. On Sunbright’s next possession the Bulldogs picked off a bad throw at midfield and once again Link drove the Bulldogs down to the Sunbright 12 yard line where Link found Chris Hackney wide open in the end zone for a touchdown. The point-after was good for a Bulldog lead of 34-7 lead with 6:13 left in the third quarter.

Defensive Bulldog free safety Kelby Wheeler intercepted an errant pass and Wheeler raced 81 yards for a touchdown and the home crowd gave the Bulldogs a standing ovation. The Bulldogs would add their final score of the game on a three yard run by link to give the Bulldogs a 47-7 lead with 1:46 left in the 4th quarter. Sunbright would add a touchdown in the last few minutes and the Bulldogs would claim their fourth win of the season 47-13.
