RBS drops two games to Clay County
The Red Boiling Springs boys and girls welcomed Clay County to the Dog Pound last Tuesday night and before the largest crowd in the gym this season Clay County was able to win both girls and boys games. Clay County defeated the Lady Bulldogs by a final score of 50-36 and Clay won the boys game 66-53.Both games were a lot closer than the final score indicated.
The Clay County girls have a very good team with lots of speed and size and those combinations were the main reason they won the girls game. The Lady Bulldogs were coming off four consecutive days of traveling to the Scotsville KY tournament that had 16 teams. The Lady Bulldogs finished in third place and were very tired as the score shows.
The Lady Bulldogs led this game 12 to 10 after the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime. Josie Green came alive for the Lady Bulldogs by knocking down three shots from long distance and Claire Fleming scored 13 first half points. Bre Thompson scored only two first half points but she had six first half boards. The Lady Bulldogs led 34-31 going into the fourth quarter and this is when fatigue roared its ugly head and Clay County had nine second hand chances and the Lady Bulldogs simply ran out of gas. The Lady Bulldogs scored only two points in the fourth quartetr by going 1 for 14 from the field. Clay won the game by a final score of 50-36.
The Lady Bulldogs are starting district play now and this Friday night a trip to Gordonsville will be a district game. The scoring totals for the Clay County game are: Fleming 15 points, Josie Green 9 points, Chloe Powell 5 points, Bailey Massengille 2 points, Thompson 2 points, and DeAwndria Polk 3 points. The Lady Bulldogs need to win at Gordonsville to even their district record at 1-1.
The boys game showed marked improvement by Red Boiling Springs and a lot of the hustle play can be attributed to the play of Joe Birdwell who was playing his first game of the season because of injuries. Birdwell made everyone else on the team play better and the light at the end of the tunnel is shinning. Birdwell scored 14 points and 8 boards. His presence on the floor was a huge plus for the Bulldogs.
Clay County dressed 18 kids for this game and 12 of those saw action. The Bulldogs dressed 10 kids and eight of them saw action. One young man beside Birdwell showed something that we all knew he would given time, Aubrey Link. Yes this is the same young man who plays quarterback on the Bulldog football team. Link scored 13 points on 5 of 8 from shooting and he had 14 rebounds and he held his own with the kids from Clay County around the basket.
The Bulldogs trailed at halftime 48-43 and Mr. everything for the Bulldogs Colton Copas scored on a three point shot that gave the Bulldogs a 46-44 lead with 5:12 left in the game. The Bulldogs gave their best effort of this season and playing together on both ends of the floor showed. Look for the Bulldogs to be in every game from the rest of the season.
Scoring was: Copas 17 points, Birdwell 14 points, Link 13 points, Riley Thompson 6 points plus 9 assists, and Chris Hackney 3 points.
