RBS Splits with Smith County

Last Monday night Red Boiling Springs split a pair of games with Smith County High School.

This game was all defense by both teams and the first quarter ended in a six all tie. The Lady Bulldogs Claire Fleming made a three and Bailey Massengille made the other one. The Lady Owls missed eight shots from within the circle and Red Boiling Springs was 0 for 9 from two point range. Great defense by both teams but some shots were wide open layups.

The halftime score was 20-16 with the Lady Bulldogs in the lead thanks to Josie Green who knocked down two shots from long distance. This young lady needs to shoot more because she is a good shooter and the Lady Bulldogs need more offense from the guard position. Fleming added five second quarter points and Chole Powell made a three pointer.

The Lady Owls out scored Red Boiling Springs in the third quarter 10-6 as once again the Lady Bulldogs simply could not get any open shots. We go to the fourth quarter with a score of 26 all. The Lady Owls were playing a zone defense with a match up on Claire Fleming and this defense was keeping Fleming from driving to the basket. Fleming had two third quarter points and Bre Thompson had a two point basket.

The Lady Bulldogs decided to go inside to center Bre Thompson and she responded by scoring six points early in the quarter and Fleming was double teamed every time on offense. The Lady Owls forgot about Marshall and she tied the game at 36 all with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Owls failed to score on two consecutive possessions but made a free throw to grab a lead of 37-36. On the Lady Bulldogs next possession they used the clock to find a open shot and Kennedy Marshall made them pay by knocking down another three pointer. Bre Thompson made two free throws to seal the win with your final score of 41-37.

The boys game was a great game to watch as both teams played outstanding basketball as the Smith County boys won in overtime by a final score of 54-52. The Bulldogs just could not make a basket when they had to and Smith County made two free throws to break a tie score of 50-50 and a desperate shot at the horn by the Bulldogs was way off.

The Bulldogs came out making great passes and when they got a open shot they knocked down those shots. The Bulldogs opened the game with their leading scorer Colton Copas making a three pointer as did Aubrey Link. Joe Birdwell along with Riley Thompson made a basket each and Chris Hackney made three free throws and the Bulldog defense and rebounding gave the Bulldogs a 15-10 lead after the first quarter.

The Owls did not expect Aubry Link to be a factor in this game but that was a mistake on their part. Link was all over the floor setting screens and rebounding the ball and getting out on the fast breaks. Link had five first half points and seven rebounds and he did not turn the ball over one time. Colton Copas had nine first half points and five boards and three steals in the first half. Joe Birdwell continued to get better every game as he continues to get over his surgery. He scored four points and had two blocked shots. The Bulldogs lead at halftime 28-16.

The Bulldogs got their first half lead because they were doing the fundamentals of basketball. Taking good shots and rebounding the ball and playing great defense without fouling. The Bulldogs lead of 12 points was a first for these young men and they showed their support by yelling and offering encouraging advice on what to do next.

Smith County came out for the second half and mixed their defense up switching from a full court press to a zone and this defense helped them cut the Bulldog lead down to four points at 41-37 going to the fourth quarter. The Owls scored 21 points in the third quarter and had only one turnover. Hackney had six points to lead the Bulldogs scoring in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs scored nine fourth quarter points as Link had four points, Hackney had three points, and Thompson had two points. The Owls held the ball for over almost two minutes in overtime with the score tied at 52 all and made a basket with seven seconds left to win the game 54-52. The Bulldogs played a great game.
