Macon County begins post season action

Last week the basketball teams at Macon County High School ended their regular season and began tournament play.
The regular season ended with a final region game at Murfreesboro Central Magnet on Feb 17th. The Tigerettes got off to a fast start leading 22-14 at the end of the first quarter and 36-27 at halftime. The Tigerettes managed to score 19 points off turnovers in the contest and never trailed in the contest. They went on to win by a final score of 62-46.
Scoring was: Kaylee Slayton 15 points, Allie Kate Austin 15 points, Ariana Jones 11 points, Chloe Solomon, Savannah Keene, and Katie Jo Shockley 6 points each, and Tori McClanahan 3 points. Keelyn Gregory, Grace Sircy, and Carter West played but did not score.
Austin, Shockley, and Slayton were named to the regular season All-District team and the Tigerettes were the #2 seed heading into the 8-3A district tournament.
The boys’ game was much like the girls. Macon jumped out to an early lead 21-16 after the first stanza and weathered a run by Magnet to lead 34-31 at the break. Some key Macon turnovers and missed shots kept Magnet in the game but Macon still led 45-42 heading to the final eight minutes. Macon managed to convert seven of their fifteen shots in the waning minutes to win the game by a final score of 64-56.
Scoring was: Braylon Marshall 24 points, McKade Mix 17, Aiden Barlow 11 points, Jake Meador 8 points, and Brody Huffines 4 points. Gael Sanchez played but did not score.
With the win Macon would win a share of the regular season district title but lose the coin flip to get the #2 seed in the district tournament. Mix was named the regular season MVP and Marshall, Barlow, and Meador were named to the regular season All-District team.
The district tournament was scheduled to begin on Feb 21st at Watertown High School. The ‘Tiger District’ (every mascot of each team in the district is the Tigers) began for the Macon girls on Saturday afternoon against DeKalb County. Macon and DeKalb had split their two regular season games with each home team winning in the regular season.
Macon led 7-6 after the first period. However trailing 10-11 early in the second quarter DeKalb would go on a 14 point run, while Macon would not score again in the half, to break the game open. DeKalb led 20-11 at the break. Macon would outscore DeKalb in each of the final two quarters but just could not make up the deficit. Final score Macon County 33 DeKalb County 38.
Scoring was: Shockley 10, Austin 8, Solomon 8, Slayton 4, and Jones 3. McClanahan and Keene each played but did not score.
Macon boys played the very next game once again against Central Magnet. This one was even tighter that the game played four days prior. Macon led 14-12 at the end of the first but the contest was tied at 23 at halftime. Leading 40-36 heading into the final quarter Macon would break the game open to win by a final score of 61-50. With the win Macon would secure a home game second round contest at Nera White Gymnasium.
Scoring was: Mix 16, Marshall 12, Barlow 16, Meador 10, and Huffines 7.
The Tigerettes will play Central Magnet in the district consolation game on Feb 23rd at 6 pm while the boys will play DeKalb in the championship game on Feb 24th at 7:30 pm. Both games will be in Watertown and both teams will advance to the next round of postseason play.
