Joe Edward “Dub” Holland, 91

  Joe Edward “Dub” Holland,
of Lafayette, was born on Saturday, August 7, 1920 in Macon County, Tennessee,
one of two siblings born to the late Ray and Lula Carter Holland. He departed
this life on Saturday morning, September 3rd, 2011 at the age of 91 years and
27 days. Funeral services for Joe Holland were conducted on Monday, September
5th, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Anderson and Son Funeral Home in
Lafayette with Jerry Mercer officiating.

  Pallbearers were Sam Holland,
Sam Hale, Jackie Douglas, Jamie Holland, Jack Vanderpool and Newton Derryberry.
Interment followed in the Anderson & Son Memorial Park in Lafayette, TN. On
November 7, 1946, Joe married the beautiful love of his life, the former Marell
Brawner. To this union was born two fine sons, who gave them four
grandchildren. Joe was raised in Macon County. His Earliest years were spent
right off the square in Lafayette, where his first job was selling milk from
the cows that he milked each morning. Even then, he was a well-known figure as
he went door to door traveling with a horse that knew where to stop for the
milk delivery. He was Valedictorian of his high school graduating class. He had
a curious mind and eagerness to work and learn, so he earned lots of different
titles: He worked as a “Printer’s Devil” at the Macon County Times, depending on horses for transportation and work, he
learned some blacksmithing, was a mail carrier for a time after helping a
fellow mailman who needed assistance due to illness in the family, had been a
“Rapid Checker” for the tobacco Company in Hartsville where he followed tobacco
graders confirming their grades. He had an offer to play baseball in the major
leagues, but did not want to leave home. His father had inherited the Holland
Land surveying business from his father and Joe began assisting with that more
when his father became ill and he became known in the middle Tennessee area as
a dependable, knowledgeable Land Surveyor himself. He worked as a Licensed
Surveyor for over 50 years. He was bonded to carry out the surveying for Macon
County. He was a familiar sight to almost everyone in the county as he walked
out the property lines of almost every hill and valley of the area. It would be
hard to estimate the miles that Joe has walked as he helped landowners set
their boundaries. Today Holland Land Surveying is still operating now in its
fifth generation of Holland’s. He also found time to pursue his hobbies, in
particular woodworking in his shop behind their home near where he was raised.
Their beautiful home holds many pieces of furniture and accessories that he
made himself. Through it all, he was known as “Dub”, a nickname his family had
given him. He was a member of the Lafayette Church of Christ. He was
preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Carter Holland. In
addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by Sons and daughters-in-law,
Mike and Debby Holland, Lafayette, Joey and Shelly Holland of Hendersonville,
Grandchildren, Sam Holland and Leigh Holland of Lafayette, Jamie Holland of
Hendersonville, Abby Holland of Knoxville.
