I once read of this man who planted two sixty-foot rows of potatoes in his garden. When he dug them he got only eighteen potatoes. Eighteen little potatoes. He ate the whole crop for supper. He said he had an excellent crop of vines but few potatoes.

That shows us how the show goes. His potato crop looked as he would make many potatoes, but it was a failure. Healthy vines do not always result in a good harvest.
You know, this is the way it is with some people. Spiritually and morally, they are growing vines instead of potatoes. They put on a good show, but that’s all. Their vines look good, but they have no real fruit on them. They are vines without “taters.”
If we produce vines without “taters,” then we are just a show. We see this in politics. Politicians are good at putting on a show. They talk good talk, but they don’t walk the walk. They are vines only. The “taters” are missing. This is hypocrisy.
We also see this in religion. Some are good pew sitters. In fact, they never miss a service. They put on a good show by their faithful attendance. Unfortunately, that is all it is- vines without “taters.” They never reach out to the lost, the discouraged, the needy – never reaching out to those of other congregations. They are vines without “taters.” Their cult congregation looks good, with their pews all filled, but one day when they all appear before God in judgment, their vines without “taters” will prove to be too few.
Did you hear about this golfer who came to this anthill in a golf course? His ball landed on top of the anthill. He swung at the ball but hit a lot of ants instead. He swung again and hit more ants. Then one ant looked over at another ant and said, “If we want to get out of this alive, then we better get on the ball!” Folks, if we want to get out of this life alive and go to heaven, then we’d better stop putting on a show, growing vines only. Get on the ball! Grow “taters,” not vines.
