Tigerettes Win Region 5AA

3-05mchsbb

The Macon County High School Tigerettes win the Region 5 AA tournament held this week in Gallatin at Vol State. This is the fourth year in a row that the Tigerettes advance to at least the Sub-State round in the tournament.

On Monday the 25th, MCHS faced David Lipscomb in the Region Semi-Finals. Both teams came ready to play and the game began at a brisk pace. Both teams had four of five starts contribute to the score but after one Macon led 13-12. Just before half, Lipscomb hit two key 3 pointers to just push ahead 27-26 at the break. Balanced scoring and some swarming defense from Sophomore Briley Driver on Lipscomb’s best guard seemed to stall the Lady Mustang offense. I am not going to say we had some bad officiating, but down the stretch, MCHS did not get a single break at all. Credit Lipscomb though, down by 5 with a minute to go, they found a way to tie the game and send it to overtime 60 all. It would take two overtime periods, Lipscomb having some foul trouble, and some big 3 pointers from Kelsey Gregory to seal this victory. Tigerettes win in double overtime 74-72.

Scoring was: Kelsey Gregory 18, Kailyn Brooks 11, Terra Pryor 16, Briley Driver 19, Leah Anderson 9, and Lyndsey Belton 1. Reese Shrum played in the game but did not score.

Macon would meet CPA in the finals in Region 5AA. The defending state champions had beaten Macon last year in the region finals in a heartbreaking loss. It was evident that these girls wanted to avenge that game. CPA spent most of the season ranked in the top 10 in AA and lost only two games at a Christmas tournament during the season. I could break down the game quarter by quarter, but the fact of the matter is Macon dominated in every facet of the game. Offense, defense, inside, outside, tempo and intensity all contributed to what appeared to some an easy victory. Final score was Macon 47 CPA 33. W

Scoring was: Gregory 7, Kailyn Brooks 13, Pryor 13, Driver 6, Anderson 7 and Wilburn 1. Shrum, Belton, Owens, Ellis, and Kassidy Brooks all played but did not score. Gregory and Driver were named to the All-Region Tournament team. Terra Pryor was named Most Valuable Player in the Region 5AA tournament.

With the Region win, Macon won the right to host a sub-state game against Region 6AA runner-up Creek Wood. The game is at Nera White Gymnasium on Saturday March 2nd, 2013.
