Lady Bulldogs Sweep Monterey in Season Opener
The Red Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs had to dodge rain for a week before they played their season opener.
However the wait allowed for some good practice and the Lady Bulldogs swept a double header from the Lady Wildcats winning the opening game by a final score of 17-1 and claiming the nightcap by a final score of 29-7.
We must mention that the Wildcats were without their starting pitcher but on this day. I don’t think that would have mattered as the Lady Bulldogs came out swinging and plated seven runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to Olivia Atkins and Hailey Berry along with Taylor Cothron. All of them scored on RBI from Autumn Crowder and Shaylee Ellingson and 2 runs scored off a ringing double by Traci Knight. The home team led 5-1 and was still batting. Tamara and Katelyn Murphy both got hits and scored and the Lady Bulldogs took a 7-1 lead to the top of the second inning.
With Lady Bulldog pitcher Bailey Tucker in strong form the Lady Cats were having trouble getting the bat on the ball. Tucker used her change-up and fast ball to keep the Lady Cats guessing on what pitch was coming.
The Lady Bulldogs wasted no time jumping all over the Lady Cats by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Getting hits and scoring for the Lady Bulldogs included Kristen Stacy and Olivia Atkins while Kaitlyn Murphy and Macy Raines also got big hits and scored in the second inning. Bailey Tucker drove in 2 runs to help the Lady Bulldogs run the score up to 13-1.
The Lady Bulldogs scored 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning to end this game due to a rule that stops the game if one team has a 15 run lead after 3 innings of play. Every Lady Bulldog that played scored or drove in a run.
The second game was much like the first contest except for the fact that Monterey did managed to score 7 runs but this game was over before the Lady Cats dented their side of the scoreboard.
Abby Tuck led off the first inning by walking and then promptly stole second and third before scoring on a bunt by Tamara Murphy. Before the inning was over the Lady Bulldogs would score 16 runs and go on to claim their second win of the day by a final score of 29-7.
Sydney West had a great game as did every Lady Bulldog who played. Atkins was 2 for 3–Berry was 2 for 3–Cothron 2 for 3–Crowder had 2 doubles-Knight had 2 hits–Tucker had 2 hits and Monterey pitching dished out 22 walks for both games.
These games were played last Monday and The entire school was let out so they could come and watch their team play. There was a very large crowd on hand to cheer the Lady Bulldogs on to victory and a lot of credit should go to Don Jones and Coach Mims for their effort to let the softball team and the coaches know that the entire school backs this team.
The Lady Bulldogs welcome the powerful Trousdale County Jackets to the Dog Pound on Tuesday so they had better be ready.
