Tigerettes Roll, Tigers let one get away
The Macon County High School Tigerettes continue to roll through district play while the Tigers let an 8AA contest get away from them.
This past week Macon played York and DeKalb County.
The ever dreaded trip to Jamestown happened on Tuesday Jan 8th. The Lady Dragons had something waiting and led 14-10 at the end of the opening quarter. However the Tigerettes got one the ball (pun intended) and held a 26-22 halftime lead. They went on to win going away by a final score of 60-45.
A telling stat indicative on how to win on a night where you may not have your best offensive game is play tough defense. Macon got 16 steals and forced 23 turnovers which translated to 16 more offensive shots that York (50 to 34) which proved to be the difference.
Scoring was: Jalynn Gregory 24, Keeley Carter 13, Marah King 12, Abby Shoulders 8, and Jamie Ashburn 3. Emily Ashburn, Kinsley Arnett, Briea Crouch, Myle Crowder, McKaylee Mix, Graci Scott, and Taylor Ward all played but did not score.
Many people thought the Dragons might make some noise this season, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Tigers jumped out to a 33-22 lead at the break and kept their foot on the gas to win 65-47. The big difference was a great night shooting, as the Tigers shot 24 of 44 (54%) from the field.
Scoring was: Cameron Welch 17, Kelton Ballou 12, Trent Cook 10, Connor Johnson 9, Lake Reid 8, Clay West 4, Braydee Brooks 3, and Ethan Jenkins 2. Cody Cothron, Noah Hale, Gavin Clayborne, Kyson Herald, and Brandon Jones all played but did not score.
On Friday Jan 11th the Lady Tigers of DeKalb County who were undefeated in district play. I took Coach Larry White and his girls a bit to get started, but when they did DeKalb didn’t have a chance. Both teams started slow but eventually the Tigerettes did what they had to do and their athleticism took over. Leading 37-21 at the break, they went on to win 61-36.
Scoring was: Carter 21 points (10 rebounds), Gregory 18, King 7, Shoulders 6, J. Ashburn 6, E. Ashburn 2, and Crouch 1. Mix, Arnett, Crowder, Scott, and Ward all played but did not score.
The Tigers simply let the game against DeKalb slip away. Tied 8-8 after the first quarter Macon went cold scoring and got outscored 38-20 in the next 16 minutes. DeKalb did just what they needed to do in order to get only their second district win of the season and won 61-49.
Scoring was: Cook 15, Brooks 9, West 8, Jenkins 6, Ballou 5, Welch 3, and Johnson 3. Hale and Noah Likens played but did not score.
This will set-up the first show-down of the 2019 season as Macon County will travel to face Upperman on Tuesday Jan 15th to see who will take the early District 8-AA lead. Macon will also travel to Smith County on Friday Jan 18th. Both are scheduled to tip at 6 pm.
