Bulldogs Sweep Smith County

The high school basketball season got underway last Saturday for the Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs played the Lady Owls from Smith County and a 16-11 first quarter lead by the Lady Bulldogs turned into a close game at halftime with the Lady Bulldogs up 30-27. The Lady Bulldogs depend on the three point shot to get them going but made only one shot from long distance out of eight attempts. Things improved for the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter as they made 11 free throws and knocked down their 4th shot from three point range.

The Lady Owls were hanging tough by hitting five shots from three point range and playing tough defense by switching from a man to man to a match-up zone and the half time break gave the Lady Bulldogs a chance to make adjustments. Those adjustments showed a great offensive spurt with the Lady Bulldogs scoring 19 points and a 49-39 third quarter lead. Scoring leaders for the Lady Bulldogs at the end of three quarters were Liz Anderson with 19 points, Kennedy Fleming with 19 points, and Haley Davis with nine points. Davis added nine fourth quarter points that put this game on ice. The Lady owls played well but just ran out of gas in the 4th quarter. Claire Fleming added 5 points and Ishea Smith added 3 points and Haley McCarter added 2 points

The Lady Bulldogs out rebounded the Lady Owls 34 to 21 and the home team led in steals 21-12. Defense was what carried the Lady Bulldogs in this game. Now the Lady Bulldogs make their first road trip tonight as they make the long trip to Jo Byrns. We almost forgot to tell our readers that there were 56 fouls called in this game.

The boys game was close after the first quarter with the Bulldogs up 13-9 but that all changed as the Bulldogs exploded for 18 second quarter points while holding the Owls to only six points and the Bulldogs held a 31-15 lead. Scoring leaders in the first half was spread among Cody Mea six points, Dalton Marsh eight points, James Sampson six points, Matthew Murphy five points, Omar Williams and Justin Bohannon each scored 4 first half points. The Bulldogs controlled the boards by a 24 to 9 margin with Marsh leading the way with 11 boards.

The Bulldogs turned up their defense in the third quarter by forcing seven turnovers and this game was a 69-47 victory over the Smith County Owls. The Owls are in a rebuilding year and while they have good kids they suffer from not enough scoring in the paint.

The Bulldogs are hurting with injuries with Mason Hix out with a broken wrist and Dalton Thompson is out for the season. This forces Bulldog Head Coach Michael Owens to use his bench with kids who are not used to starting and the other kids are not ready for the pressure of playing even though they will contribute later. Coach Owens has these kids at 4-1 and that is a good start. Expect Hix back in 3 more weeks.
