Tigers win three in Smokey Mtn Showdown


The Macon County High baseball team took a little road trip on their spring break to compete in the Smokey Mountain Showdown in East Tennessee. They came away with three wins.

On Wednesday Apr 1 the Tigers faced Eagleton College and Career Academy. This game wasn’t an April fool’s when the Tigers pounded out runs in each inning they came to the plate and run-ruled the Royals in five innings winning 16-6.

Gunner Carlisle won the game on the mound as he threw four innings and allowed four hits, three earned runs, and recorded seven strike-outs. Mason Bandy provided one inning of relief and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Jake Meador and Eli Carver both went 3 for 4 at the plate while Meador and Ty Bilbrey each collected three RBIs. Gage Jones and Matthew Wheeley had two hits while Emerson McClard, Hayden Dean, and Roman Brawner had one apiece.

On Thursday April 2 Macon County faced the William Blount Governors. Down 1-3 Macon scored in three of the last four innings to come from behind and win 6-3.

Wheeley was the pitcher of record going all seven innings scattering five hits and three earned runs with five strike-outs. Carson Brawner and McClard had two hits each while Chase Keene had one.

On Friday April 3 Macon faced the Greenback Cherokees. Again down 2-4 Macon scored one in the bottom of the 4th inning, three in the 5th, and three in the bottom of the 6th to come from behind again on a Gage Jones single to win 9-8.

Keene got the win on the mound throwing three and one-third innings allowing two hits, three earned runs and four strike-outs. Keenan White threw two and one-third innings allowing three hits and three earned runs and Mason Bandy pitched one-third of an inning allowing two hits and one earned run.

McClard was 4 for 4 at the plate and scored three runs while Jones went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Wheeley, Meador, Ty Bilbrey, Carson Brawner, Roman Brawner, and Carver also collected hits. Everyone in the line-up contributed in some way.

Finally on Saturday April 4 the Tigers faced the 3A Maryville Rebels. In another high scoring game this time the tables turned. With the game tied 11-11 and in the bottom of the 7th inning the Rebels would single home a run and win 12-11.

Roman Brawner took the loss on the mound as he threw three and one-third innings of relief and allowed three hits and two earned runs. Carver started the game and threw three innings and allowed seven hits and eight earned runs.

In the game Meador had three hits and Dean, Keene, and Roman Brawner had two each. McClard and Jones also recorded one hit and had two RBIs apiece.

Now the Tigers will be back in action this week hosting Watertown on Apr 7, traveling to Smith County on Apr 9, then playing in Gainesboro on the weekend at the Alex Cassetty Classic on Apr 10 (3 pm) and 11 (12:15 pm).
